Thursday Movie Picks / Oscar Winners: Best Original Score and Best Original Song

 I am doing Thursday Movie Picks for the first time ever.

 It is hosted by Wandering through the Shelves. 

 

 The theme for Thursday this week is Oscar Winners: Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

 Ideally I should of posted this on Thursday, but I've been so busy I haven't had time to write anything till now.

Best Original Score 

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

I love the score for this movie. It's very lighthearted and fun, and it suits the movie perfectly.


The Sound of Music (1965)

 The score for this movie is very good. It's one of my favorites. 


Chariots of Fire (1981)

 I think the score is one of the things that really make this movie. I love it. It's very moving and very good.

 

Best Original Song

Swing Time (1936) ~ "The Way You Look Tonight" 

I love this song, and it was the third song to win the Academy Award for Best Song.


Holiday Inn (1942) ~ "White Christmas"

This is a classic Christmas song, that is still very popular today.


Going My Way (1944) ~ "Swinging on a Star"

 I had to include this song.

 I liked this song when I first heard it when I was ten, and I still like it today.

    Welcome!! We Match with The Way You Look Tonight. A so g I truly love. I almost went with your other 2 picks fpr songs. White Christmas is iconic and Swinging on a Star is fun. I was tight this in grade school. I love the scores you chose as well.7 Brides is full.of fun and exuberance and Nthe Sound Of Music is just another iconic musical score that we all.know so well. I like Chariots of Fire that upset the Oscars because so many won that year that was not American. I remember that. Hope to see you here more

    Welcome! It's always nice to see new people join it!! Love all but one of your choices.

    Seven Brides is a cotton candy pretty picture (even at the beginning when the men are supposed to be filthy they are at best scruffy) with that signature MGM look. The score particularly the music for the barn raising is fantastic.

    I'm sure this will date me but I saw The Sound of Music on its original theatrical run, though I was pretty small. I remember it so well because it was pouring so hard we could hear the rain on the roof! Be that as it may the score is memorable and wonderful.

    Which brings me to your pick that I have zero love for-Chariots of Fire. Again I saw it in the theatre and it was AGONY! I found it formulaic and cloying and if I never heard that damn theme song again it will be much too soon. I know I'm in the minority, the friend I went to see it with was crying at the end, but not every movie is for everybody.

    The Way You Look Tonight is a great song. The staging of the number in Swing Time (my favorite Astaire/Rogers pairing) is charming.

    I'm a huge Bing Crosby fan! Swinging on a Star is a lively tune and perfect fit for Going My Way, I have to admit though I have more affection for The Bells of St. Mary. Who doesn't love White Christmas? I'm sure there are some Grinches out there but I'm sure they are few and far between. It can represent so many different emotions to different people which of course is what makes it timeless.

    I don't have a blog so I post my picks along with my comment. I stuck with the song category and there were still so many ways to go, I decided to do a theme within the theme choosing three that share their title with the film they won the Oscar for. All three were also extremely successful musically on the charts.

    The Way We Were (1973)-Fiery, opinionated Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand) meets handsome goyish guy Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford) in college during the 30’s. While he admires her moxie and she his writing talent they move in different circles. As WWII is winding down, they meet again and despite their vast differences they fall in love and marry but those very differences eventually tear their relationship asunder. Both the film and the title tune by Marvin Hamlisch, Alan & Marilyn Bergman were gigantic hits, the Streisand’s recording of the song going to # 1 on Billboard as well as winning the Grammy as Record of the Year.

    The Days of Wine and Roses (1962)-Gut wrenching chronicle of young couple Joe & Kirsten Clay’s (Jack Lemmon & Lee Remick-both Oscar nominated) descent into blackout alcoholism. Fittingly for something so dark the title song by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer has a mournful quality but a soulful lilting beauty. Recorded by many artists it reached # 9 on the Billboard charts.

    The Joker is Wild aka All the Way (1957)-Joe E. Lewis (played by Frank Sinatra) was a rising singer on the Chicago nightclub scene of the Roaring Twenties until he angered a mob boss by switching clubs. In retaliation the mobster has Lewis’s throat cut, slashing his vocal cords and therefore his career. He slowly worked his way back as a comic over the next decade. Sinatra’s recording of All the Way written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn was so popular (# 2 on the Billboard charts) the film was retitled to match it upon re-release.

My Ten Favorite Disney Movie Soundtracks

 In my opinion one of the things that really makes a movie is the soundtrack, and I have always been a fan of the classic Disney soundtracks from the 60s-70s. I'm not going to be counting Disney musicals in this list, and this list is in no particular order.  1 . Candleshoe (1977)   Candleshoe's soundtrack by Ron Goodwin is probably one of my favorite soundtracks  You can listen to it on YouTube here: Candleshoe Soundtrack   2. The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca and The Swamp Fox

 My favorite TV series Disney made was their historical fiction shows in the 50s and 60s.  While Davey Crockett was probably their most famous historical show; Disney also made other shows such as; The Swamp Fox, Texas John Slaughter, and Elfego Baca.  For this post I'm going to be talking about the two shows I'm most familiar with, "The Swamp Fox" and "The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca." "The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca" (1958-1960)  Based on the true story of Elfego Baca, (played by Robert Loggia), this series is one of my favorite westerns.  The episodes were introduced by Walt Disney, and had a catchy theme song.  The pilot episode tells the true story of when Elfego Baca held of eighty cowboys who fired 4,00 bullets in to the shack he was holding up in; and he wasn't even wounded.  The series lasted for ten episodes, and most, if not all, of them can be found on YouTube.  "The Swamp Fox" (1959-1961)  Based on the true story story of Re
